how
i've spent close to a decade watching people decide where they want to work next and helping companies win them over.
it's a fun position to be in. people get real about why they're leaving a company they once said yes to. why they turn down offers that seem insane on paper. why they'd take a chance on a company nobody's heard of, for equity that's still just on paper.
and i get to see sides of them that their teammates, managers, and sometimes even their friends don't. what actually matters to them. money, friendships, personal validation, convenience, life events. it's almost never just one thing. usually a mix.
on the company side, it's pretty common for everyone to want the same people. and when those people have options, founders at companies nobody's heard of can't rely on their brand equity to get someone excited. they have to spend more time with people, understand what they're looking for, and make a case for why working with them towards their vision might make more sense than spending their time doing literally anything else.
there's a difference between being a great company for most people and being the right company for a specific person. figuring out that difference is the part i understand best, and where i have the most fun.
